Medical Pathology Laboratory has started its active work in Kayseri State Hospital since 1985 with one staff member and one light microscope.

In line with the increasing and diversified biopsy materials with the enriched doctor and personnel staff of our pathology laboratory; Breast pathology and gynecopathology, gastrointestinal system pathology, endocrine system pathology, liver, pancreas and biliary tract pathology, lymphoid system pathology, male genital and urinary system pathology, dermatopathology, bone and soft tissue pathology, hematopathology, respiratory system pathology, central nervous system pathology He continues to work in the fields of nephropathology and cytopathology. Along with these specific studies, he started special laboratory studies for specialized methods. Since 2001, it has become a fully equipped pathology clinic, including immunohistochemical examinations. It has been serving as a training clinic since the end of 2012. There are different subunits under the roof of our laboratory. These are routine histopathology laboratory, cytology laboratory, histochemistry laboratory, immunohistochemistry laboratory, immunofluorescence laboratory and molecular pathology laboratory. Infrastructure has been established for the completion of other necessary equipment for the molecular pathology unit and the studies are in the beginning phase.

The number of cases examined in our clinic is increasing from year to year, and as of 2017, it has reached a total of 62,000 per year, including biopsy and cytological materials, and the number of accepted materials continues to increase with the same acceleration.

Our Pathology Training Clinic Laboratory is located in the basement of the General Hospital. It provides diagnostic services to outpatients and inpatients of all ages. This service is five (5) days a week and eight (8) hours a day. Registration office material acceptance hours are between 8:30 -17:00 In this laboratory, biopsy, surgical materials sent from the Clinic / Polyclinic / Operating Room and previously examined or unexamined samples sent from external centers for consultation are made ready for microscopic examination and evaluated.

PATIENT INFORMATION ABOUT EXAMINATIONS

The definitive diagnosis of many diseases, especially cancers, is made by examining the tissues or fluids taken from the patients in pathology laboratories. Small tissue samples (biopsy), body fluids (thoracic cavity fluid, pericardial fluid, abdominal fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, etc.), swab samples (vaginal smear, etc.) Also, surgically removed organs are examined .In special cases, the tissues taken during the surgery are examined quickly and the doctor is informed immediately. In other cases, the time to write the pathology report may take longer depending on the characteristics of the tissue and the examinations performed. In cases where the treatment of the patient and the procedures to be performed may be affected, the physician monitoring the patient is informed.

As a result of pathological examinations, the changes caused by diseases in tissues or organs are evaluated and the diagnosis is made. These examinations are made by examining tissues or cells under microscopes (light, fluorescent) for different purposes after undergoing certain processes. In these stages, besides the classical methods including direct visual and light microscope evaluation of the tissue, modern laboratory methods (histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, etc.) are also used within the framework of the possibilities of technology. In our department, pathologists who are experts in their fields evaluate the samples and give a diagnosis. Reports of the cases are archived in computer environment and bound, paraffin blocks and all slides are stored in archives.

In our department, multidisciplinary studies and researches are carried out to investigate the causes, diagnosis and prognosis of various diseases and cancers, and also contribute to the training activities of doctors and specialists. Medical autopsy is also applied to people who have died in the clinics, with the request of the doctor watching the patient and the approval of the patient's relatives, in order to investigate the cause of death.
